Shows to Binge Watch on Netflix this Summer gold&hearts goldandheartsWhat time is it? Summer time! It’s our vacation! I’m done with the High School Musical throwback, but summer is here. Finals are finally over (I’m so sorry), and it’s time to relax till summer classes and internships start. Summer is synonymous with binge-watching Netflix and wearing pajamas all day. Especially since, in Texas, the floods are currently limiting our willingness to drive, so we’ve resorted to sitting in bed all day. We’ve personally been burning through Friends and Park and Rec, again. If you’re running out of things to watch, we are going to compile a list of shows for you to watch.

Wishlist | Books for this Summer

Books to read this summer! | gold&hearts

Summer is here, and we wanted to start it off with a bang. If you’re bored to death already or need some entertainment while tanning, we have compiled a list of books by our favorite females. This year has been the one of the #FEMINIST, so all these books are written by ladies discussing their life experiences that will make you laugh, cry, and empathize. Personally, we are hoping to read the rest this summer. Use these books to inspire yourself to start a business this summer or just be the best version of yourself.

  1. Bad Feminist is an everyday version of the feminist manifesto. It’s a collection of essays by Roxanne Gay who describes herself as a bad feminist. It’s really redefining feminism in a modern sense where you can love pink and read Vogue but still stand up for equal pay. 
  2. Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns) is Mindy Kaling’s brain child, and the book, like her, is hilarious. Reading this book is like hearing her animatedly whispering in your ear. Her writing style is just like hearing her speak, and she discusses her experiences growing up as Indian-American. 
  3. Bossypants is a behind the scenes look at Tina Fey’s life told by Tina Fey herself. She fills the book with experiences about growing up a mega nerd and fulfilling her dreams of becoming a comedian. She’s one of the most relatable celebrities who attending college and became who she is. Her story is full of hilariously Tina Fey moments that’ll have you laughing and crying. 
  4. #GIRLBOSS is the inspiration you need this summer to get that business going. Sophia Amoruso, the founder of Nasty Gal, talks about her rise from nothing to the glorious empire she’s created. As a female CEO, which there are far and few, she can inspire you to truly take that business/blog/idea to a whole new level. 
  5. In Yes Please, Amy Poehler discusses her life experiences and provides advices in her own hilarious way. She talks about her life and career and how to approach your own. From stories to lists to poetry, this books is filled with hilarious anecdotes reinforcing some strong messages. 
  6. Cupcakes and Cashmere is the product of one of our own, by own I mean a blogger, Emily Schuman. Her blog is immaculate her life is actually my #lifegoals. In her book, she discusses recipes, party-planning tips, and DIYs in her truly elegant style. I have a feeling this book will become my bible on my “how to be a real adult.”
  7. Lean In is the book to consult on being a woman in the corporate world. I’m a business major. and I’m forever inspired by Sheryl Sandberg, the COO of Facebook. She’s a woman who truly has it all because she works hard at what she does. She combines her own experiences with data and facts to really create a picture of women in the workforce. 
  8. In Hard Choices, Hillary Clinton discusses her life after the 2008 presidential election and working with Obama. Regardless of your political leaning, I think Clinton is a big inspiration to women because she’s easily the most powerful female we have in government. As a country to never have a female leader, I think she has blazed a path for women. 
  9. How to Be a Heroine: Or, What I’ve Learned from Reading too Much discusses all the major heroines in the classics and tries to pinpoint the exact definition of a heroine. Samantha Ellis examines heroines from Jane Eyre to Slyvia Plath to Cathy Earnshaw and how she might have spent her life choosing the wrong heroines to follow. 
  10. Orange Is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison is the book that started the hit Netflix series. Learn about the real story of Piper (Kerman) in prison. Warning: there’s much less sex, but it’s just as heart-wrenching. Also, Larry doesn’t suck in this version.

How to Destress

Finals are final-ly over! You’re free from all (or most) academic responsibility, and it’s time to sit back, relax, and watch even more Netflix than you did during the school year. We’re here to help you get refreshed after finals (or any other jam-packed week) because no one wants to make seven cups of coffee a daily lifestyle requirement. Here are a few things you can do to have the stress-free “me time” that everyone needs once in a while.

Take a bath or shower.

Pamper yourself by taking a relaxing shower or bath; like a real one, not just perfunctory in and out. Don’t give yourself a time limit but soak it in (literally). Use some of Rien’s great handmade soap* with vitamin E to smell and feel better before giving your face a good scrub down with our favorite St. Ives exfoliator*. Take extra time on your hair with the L’Oreal Advanced Straight System*. It’s complete with shampoo, conditioner, and a pre-conditioner that’ll make your hair smooth and soft.

Seriously pamper yourself.

Do things just for you. Make yourself feel beautiful. Do things not that you think you need, but that make you feel better and more beautiful. After your shower, maybe put some instant tanning lotion on, like Jergens Natural Glow Instant Sun*, to kickstart summer without matching the sheets of paper you’ve been reviewing. Make yourself a lip scrub out of honey, coconut oil, and sugar, and when you’re through with that, apply Softlips Cube* (also known as the best lip balm to ever exist) to keep your lips from chapping.

Watch your favorite movies.

Break out your DVD collection and log back into your Netflix because you’re having a movie night! You could also go out to a theater and watch Pitch Perfect 2 with your friends; whatever you feel like! I’d prefer getting cozy in my own bed watching Lilo and Stitch, though, so I can break out all the snacks I want. My favorites right now are the Sour Punch Punchies and Rainbow Straws*, and I usually don’t like sour candy!

Buy something.

Retail therapy actually works. Treat yourself and buy that thing you’ve been wanting, whether it’s lipstick or a pair of socks. We promise you won’t regret it later because you absolutely deserve it!

Meditate.

Clear your mind, all of it. This is the biggest and most important part of this entire list. Do whatever it takes to fully focus on your brain, even if it’s just for a few minutes. If you’d like, use an app like Headspace for a timed meditation or just wing it and be free from all surroundings for as long as you want. Try and make this a regular thing, and life will be much less stressful.

Finals | Ultimate Guide

Ah, yes. Finals are upon us. The next two weeks will be filled with endless all-nighters, some tears, and memories of shared misery. Some good decisions will be made (studying) and some bad decisions will be made (drinking 5-hour energy and starting a new show on Netflix). These are the times we can commiserate and feel free in a short amount of time. Endless summer days of absolutely nothing are coming! Are you ready to sit by the pool all day and get a great sunburn with that new trendy strappy bathing suit? It’s okay. We feel the pressure too, but we want to help YOU get through this week more productively. We’ve compiled a master list of studying tips and tricks to help you have the smoothest and best finals week ever.

You have an idea in your head of all the things you have to accomplish. Get it out of there! Use a printable to help get everything on paper and in order. Get all the tasks you need to accomplish into a handy to-do list you can take with you wherever you go. It’s time to start studying! Do you even remember how to do that? We have so many different tricks and tips to help you out. Are you ready to study for that class you haven’t paid attention in and haven’t been to in a while? Last, but not least, remember to destress, so you stay on top of your game. You are worth so much more than your grades. Remember that when dealing with your stress. If you put in your best effort, you know you’ll get the highest grade you can achieve.
